What is the Meaning of Depression and Mood Swings?

Depression is a very common mood disorder, that in some instances, can be very serious.  Because it is a state of having a low mood, it usually affects one’s sense of wellness, their behavior and their thoughts. Examples of the symptoms of depression are things such as hopelessness, worthlessness, anger, sadness, irritability, restlessness and anxiety.  The result of these symptoms can be things like loss of appetite, insomnia, digestive issues, body aches and pains, overeating, oversleeping and even suicide.  Addictions, diseases, trauma, sexual abuse, physical or verbal abuse, loss, medications, and family or relationship issues can all be factors in depression.

Mood swings are a sudden, rapid or even frequent changes in mood.  Mood swings can manifest themselves positively and negatively and can last for a moment or an extended period of time.  They are simply unpredictable emotional highs and lows.  Since depression is a state of mood, it is most often a present factor in mood swings.  Aside from mental illness, a lot of the issues that are symptoms of depression can cause mood swings, such as changes in sleep, energy or any type of substances.  A trained professional is most apt to properly diagnose your symptoms of depression and recommend an appropriate plan of care.
